stereo amp buzzing…?

I am using a vintage rotel amplifier RA 412 model connected to my PC through an external sound card and 2 wharfedale speakers.

Since I have had this set up I have experienced a very annoying buzz from the speakers…..yet when I hooked the speakers up through the aux input of a cheap jvc “3 in one” stereo the speakers were silent!

A mate suggested removing the plug and disconnecting the earth lead……which I did…..the speakers are silent.no buzz,no hum.

Can anyone explain why this happened and is it safe removing the plugs earth connection?
