Liu Shih-tung is a Taiwanese mixed media artist, born in 1970 in central Taiwan’s Miaoli County. From July to August this year, Liu started a residency at 18th Street Art Center in Los Angeles, California. Liu Shih-tung continues to be quitting installation and performance art since the early 2000s, and is now influenced by folk tradition, namely collage creation. He uses images cut from printed items, a major source of which are fashion periodicals, and recombines selected photos along with paint on flat canvas.

 

Ray Yoshida, whose mysteriously comical, semi-abstract paintings and collages and 40 years of teaching at the Art Institute of Chicago inspired generations of prominent artists. Mr. Yoshida’s very first mature work was a series of collages including things like small pictures and pieces of images cut from comics organized in nice, gridded order on sheets of paper. They look as though they were produced by a methodical but possibly deranged researcher for some unknown scholarly or scientific purpose. In the 70′s Mr. Yoshida switched to painting, but he came back to the comic image collages in the early 90s.

 

Anita Muise is a self-taught artist and ex – librarian who embraced mid-life crisis, dropped out of the business world, and moved to non-urban New Hampshire to end up artistically self-employed. She’s now the force behind AnitaNH: Collage & Life blog. She utilize postage stamps as well as ticket stubs, old pictures, book jackets and covers, little things along with numbers on them, anything old and odd that adds curiosity and helps the story. Chen Long-bin was born in 1964 in Taipei, Taiwan. He received a BFA from the Fine Arts Department at Tung-Hai University in Taiwan, and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. The advent of the personal computer changed the entire nature of information documentation – a role books used to play. Thus, by turning paper into the original wood for his sculptures, Chen offers renewed value to the meaning of paper. He uses chainsaws, drills, band saws, sanders, and scissors, along with other carpenter’s tools to shape his remarkable busts and figures, which appear stone, or even marble like from a distance.

Brian Dettmer (born 1974) is an American contemporary artist. He is noted for his alteration of preexisting media—such as old books, maps, record albums, and cassette tapes—to create new, transformed works of visual fine art. A large body of Dettmer’s current work is created by altering books, including older dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks, science and engineering books, art books, medical guides, history books, atlases, comic books, wallpaper sample books, and others. Dettmer seals and cuts into the books, exposing select images and text to create intricate three-dimensional derivative works that reveal new or alternative interpretations of the books. Dettmer never inserts or moves any of the books’ contents. (Moayeri 2008). As he cuts away unwanted material, Dettmer stabilizes the remaining paper with a varnish. (Fox 2009). An early example of Dettmer’s unique altered books is his 2003 work, New International Dictionary (pictured at right), which is an original 1947 unabridged dictionary sealed and cut to expose images within the dictionary (Sundell 2005, at pg. 70).

Tom Phillips CBE R.A. (born 24 May 1937) is an English artist. He was born in London, where he continues to work. He is a painter and collagist, and works in other media as well. His best known work is A Humument: A Treated Victorian Novel. One day, Phillips went to a bookseller’s with the express intention of buying a cheap book to use as the basis of an art project. He randomly purchased a novel called A Human Document by Victorian author William Hurrell Mallock, and began a long project of creating art from its pages. He paints, collages or draws over the pages, leaving some of the text peeking through in serpentine bubble shapes, creating a “found” text with its own story, different from the original. Characters from Mallock’s novel appear in the new story, but the protagonist is a new character named “Bill Toge”, whose surname can only appear on pages which originally contained words like “together” or “altogether”. Toge’s story is a meditation on unrequited love and the struggle to create and appreciate art.

Yuken Teruya (born 1973) is an artist based in Brooklyn. Teruya was born in Okinawa. He works in a variety of media and often references consumer culture alongside traditional craft techniques. An example of his art is the series of McDonalds and high-end designer store bags into which Teruya cuts intricate tree shapes that are then pushed through into the interior of the bag, creating an enclosed environment within.
((I don’t know about this guy. He’s included on several lists of altered book artists, but I checked his work and don’t see any “books” in his art; but it is very interesting!))

Karen Hatzigeorgiou, Altered Book Artist
Altered book and collage artist Karen Hatzigeorgiou constantly seeks for inspirations through color, texts and vintage images. As a result, her work “intertwines text and imagery in an interesting way.” Her themes are mostly around people and nature. The result is a series of complex and visually stunning work. She wrote about her process in creating Masquerade: “I crumpled silver tissue paper into a ball, smoothed it out, and then tore similarly sized pieces and placed them in a pile.
